I got asked this question the other day – Are there any artists that use mattresses in their artwork? I thought it was interesting enough that I would research a little, and here ya go:

Imagine anything inspired by a mattress. Imagine a museum inspired by mattresses. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is home to the Mattress Factory. The museum houses artists from around the world. The Mattress Factory artists live on site and provide a unique atmosphere to the museum.

The museum houses exhibits called installations. These installations are room sized and work to engage all of the senses. The Mattress Factory gets it’s name from it’s location. It is located in Pittsburgh’s North Side in two old mattress factories. The museum encourages its visitors to make connections between the art and their everyday lives.

Since its opening in 1977, the Mattress Factory has become a unique experience to all involved. It is a huge honor for artists to be invited to live there. The artists at the museum help facilitate a learning environment for students as well. Students and visitors can take a 90 minute guided tour through each installation in the museum. At the end of the tour, the students and visitors are invited to create their own art through hands-on experimentation.

Imagine living in an environment where you are encouraged to produce creativity in an old Mattress Factory. Some artists have specifically used the history of the old factory in their artwork. Who knew a mattress or a mattress factory could facilitate so much creativity.

Here is an interesting mattress that some would consider “art”, but I just think its interesting!
