Bedsores affect approximately 9 percent of all American hospital patients. Bedsores are also called decubitus ulcers. They are caused when a patient is ’stuck’ in one position. Bedsores develop when there is continual pressure placed on a certain part of the body. Body parts that protrude (like elbows and heels) are most susceptible to bedsores. Bad mattresses can also cause bedsores. The problem is that there really aren’t many things that can be done to prevent bedsores.
How exactly to bedsores form? It doesn’t take much to create a bedsore. The external pressure (especially of a person’s body) stops the blood flow to certain regions of the body. When this blood flow is cut off, oxygen cannot be delivered to the blood vessels near the surface of the skin. If the blood vessels aren’t receiving a constant blood supply or enough oxygen, it can cause the skin to die.
There are several stages of bedsores. Bedsores look like a mild sunburn when only the first layer or two dies. The treatment for these bedsores is to reintroduce air and blood flow. However, bedsores can get much much worse. The sores can spread to deeper layers of skin. In extreme cases, bedsores can cause the muscle tissue and/or bone to die as well.
Bedsores are a serious problem that affect many hospital and home-health patients. What if I told you there was one major thing that can drastically reduce and prevent bedsores. Memory foam mattresses are the most effective product on the market today to reduce and prevent bedsores. Why is this the case?
Ordinary mattresses do not contain the pressure distribution properties. In order for a mattress to alleviate the pressure points that cause bedsores, it must distribute a person’s body evenly. Memory foam mattresses do not contain any harmful coils or springs that can accentuate pressure points.
Memory foam mattresses are extremely cost effective, not to mention, good for your health. If you or a loved one is suffering from bedsores, you need to look into memory foam mattresses. A memory foam mattress may be the only solution to the bedsore problem.
